*Chinhoyi University of Technology student steals a gun from his landlord...Robs a pharmacy and uses the stolen money to buy groceries for his girlfriend*

A Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) student, Panashe Nyakwima, has been arrested after allegedly stealing a pistol from his landlord and using it to rob a pharmacy in Harare. Authorities say the 22-year-old then spent part of the stolen cash on groceries for his girlfriend in what has been described as a bizarre case of a “Fadza Madzimai” (please the wife/girlfriend) attempt gone wrong.

    A student’s shocking downfall
According to the Daily News, Nyakwima appeared in court over the weekend, facing charges of robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and theft. He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

    The Daily News reported:

“A Harare man, who is a student at the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), allegedly stole a pistol from his landlord, robbed a pharmacy and later used part of the money to buy groceries for his girlfriend.”

Court documents show that Nyakwima was arrested soon after the robbery, and the pistol was recovered.

Police confirmed the unusual incident and said investigations are still underway.

    The ‘fadza madzimai’ angle
The phrase “fadza madzimai” — meaning “please the wife or girlfriend” — has been used on social media to describe Nyakwima’s motive. The groceries, which were reportedly bought with stolen funds, have turned what could have been a typical robbery case into a story that has left many shocked.

    What the law says
Zimbabwe’s Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] outlines stiff penalties for the crimes Nyakwima is accused of.

    Section 126(2)(a) on robbery states:

“If the convicted person used or threatened to use a firearm or any other weapon likely to cause serious bodily injury, he or she shall be liable to imprisonment for life or for any definite period of not less than ten years.”

Section 27 of the Firearms Act [Chapter 10:09], which is read together with the Criminal Code, deals with unlawful possession of a firearm:

“Any person who is found in unlawful possession of a firearm shall be guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years.”

On theft, Section 113(1) of the Criminal Code states:

“Any person who takes property capable of being stolen, knowing that another person is entitled to own, possess or control it, with the intention of permanently depriving that other person of it, shall be guilty of theft.”

The penalty for theft varies with the value of the stolen property but may include imprisonment.

This means that if convicted of all counts, Nyakwima could face a minimum of 10 years in jail for the armed robbery charge alone, with the possibility of life imprisonment. The firearm charge could add up to five years, while the theft charge may add several more years.

For now, he remains in custody while his bail application is considered.

Two former employees of TX Money Transfer in Bulawayo have appeared in court facing charges of fraud involving US$33,000.

Mandiedza Kuzvidza (46), a former branch manager and Duduzile Ncube (37), a former customer service officer, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Collet Ncube. Kuzvidza and Ncube were remanded in custody to October 28. The court heard that on September 8, Ncube contacted Munetsi Dakwa, a representative of Cool Brands Bulawayo, an account holder with TX Money Transfer.

Ncube allegedly asked if Dakwa had any cash to deposit, claiming that the company had run out of money to give customers.

Dakwa allegedly informed them that he had US$33 000. Kuzvidza and Ncube went to collect the cash.

They allegedly assured Dakwa that the deposit slip would be ready the following Monday, September 9, 2024. However, they allegedly failed to deposit the money into Cool Brands’ account and instead issued a fraudulent deposit slip.

A police report was made, leading to their arrest.

*Mosquitoes Found in Iceland for the First Time*

For the first time, mosquitoes have been discovered in Iceland, following record-breaking heat this spring.

Insect enthusiast Bjorn Hjaltason spotted the mosquitoes over several nights last week while using wine-soaked ropes to attract moths, as reported by local media.

He found two female mosquitoes and one male, which were later identified as Culiseta annulata, a species known to survive winter, BBC reports.

Before this discovery, Iceland was one of only two places in the world without mosquitoes, mainly due to its cold climate. The only other mosquito-free area is Antarctica. The mosquitoes were found in Kjós, a glacial valley southwest of Reykjavik.

Hjaltason shared his findings on a local wildlife Facebook page, posting pictures and describing a “strange fly on a red wine ribbon.” He noted, “I could tell right away that this was something I had never seen before,” and added, “the last fortress seems to have fallen.”

After sending the insects to the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, entomologist Matthías Alfreðsson confirmed their identity. He mentioned that while the species is common in parts of Europe and North Africa, it’s unclear how they arrived in Iceland.

Iceland’s cold climate and lack of stagnant water, which mosquitoes need to breed, have kept them away in the past, according to the World Population Review. However, this year, Iceland experienced unusually high temperatures, breaking records. Typically, May temperatures do not exceed 20°C (68°F), but this year, highs reached 26.6°C (79.8°F) at Eglisstaðir Airport.

A study by the Global Heat Health Information Network highlighted that such temperature changes could significantly impact ecosystems adapted to colder climates. Last year was the hottest on record globally, and the UN has stated that human activity has “unequivocally” contributed to warming.

Further monitoring in spring will be needed to determine if the mosquito species has truly established itself in Iceland. Hjaltason speculated that the mosquitoes might have arrived via ships or containers from nearby Grundartangi, suggesting that if three were found in his garden, there could be more around.
