Minister Mhona Tells Drivers: No Toll Fees, No Driving

“No tollgate money? Leave your car at home.”

That was Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona’s blunt message to motorists in Parliament this week, as he reinforced government policy that toll fees are mandatory and driving without paying is simply not an option.

Mhona was responding to a supplementary question from Makoni Central MP Patrick Sagandira, who had raised concerns over the affordability of tollgate charges during a parliamentary session.

The minister made it clear that motorists must comply with tollgate regulations, regardless of their financial situation.

“If you have no money for the tollgates, you leave your motor vehicle and use public transport.

“We urge you not to drive your motor vehicles if you have no tollgate fees,” Mhona said.

His remarks come amid growing public frustration over road levies and enforcement, especially during a time of economic hardship.

Many citizens have questioned the transparency of tollgate revenue usage and the condition of some toll roads across the country.

According to Bulawayo24, the government insists that toll fees are essential for funding road maintenance and infrastructure development.

Mhona’s statement reinforces the administration’s stance that road users must contribute to the upkeep of national transport networks through mandatory toll payments.

The Ministry of Transport has faced criticism over the state of certain highways and toll plazas, but officials maintain that enforcement of tollgate fees is necessary to ensure sustainable financing for road projects.

Mhona reiterated that motorists who cannot afford toll charges should opt for public transport to avoid violating traffic regulations.
