Cameroon has re-elected 92-year-old Paul Biya to serve his eighth term as president of the country.

The Constitutional Council announced the result as protests gripped the nation.

Four people have died in clashes after opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary declared himself the winner. Over 100 arrests have been made, amidst conflict, with Tchiroma supporters claiming voter fraud.

Among those arrested were Anicet Ekane, leader of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM), and Djeukam Tchameni of the Movement for Democracy and Interdependence (MDI), both backers of Tchiroma.

Tchiroma was an ally of Biya before resigning from government in June to join the opposition.

Biya has been president since 1982. Before that, he served as Prime Minister from 1975.

He appeared once for campaign rallies, allowing his machine to do the work.

With a divided opposition, many analysts predicted this outcome.
