Bulawayo Maid Fined US$110 for Hitting Three-Year-Old Girl to "Teach" Her About Using the Toilet

A 27-year-old maid from Bulawayo has been fined $110 after she assaulted her employer’s three-year-old daughter with a switch. 

The maid, Rejoice Moyo from Pumula North, claimed she was “teaching” the child how to ask for help when she needed to use the toilet.

Moyo pleaded guilty to child ill-treatment in front of Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube. 

She must pay the fine by November 21, 2025, or serve two months in prison if she fails to do so.

In court, Moyo stated that she did not intend to hurt the little girl but wanted her to learn how to inform adults when she needed to go to the bathroom. 

According to Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu, the incident occurred on October 9, when the child's mother left her in Moyo's care. 

During that time, Moyo hit the toddler multiple times on the back with a switch, causing bruises. 

The child did not receive medical treatment, and the matter was reported to the police, resulting in Moyo's arrest.
