Police in Zimbabwe are sounding the alarm over a troubling new trend: some kombi and private car drivers are intentionally hiding or changing their number plates to evade CCTV cameras.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, called this practice a "national scar," emphasizing that offenders believe they can escape the law without being caught.
He stated, “This disturbing trend poses serious risks, including increased robberies and hit-and-run incidents.”
Nyathi noted that this issue is not limited to Bulawayo; it is a problem that affects cities all over the country.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) plans to take strong action against these offenders, labeling their actions as a threat to public safety.
He highlighted that Bulawayo is better equipped with CCTV cameras, making it harder for those who tamper with their number plates to escape detection after committing traffic violations.
However, the police are aware of the growing problem nationwide and are committed to addressing it.
Experts warn that tampering with number plates makes roads more dangerous, allowing criminals to operate without being tracked.
Many vehicles have been spotted on camera either missing plates or displaying fake ones, often obscured by plastic, paper, or mud.
The police are urging the public to report any suspicious vehicles, especially those without visible plates, as they intensify efforts to combat traffic violations and uphold public safety.
